subproject for open house 2025 @ HGK FHNW :
"Material Matters" is my overarching diploma project, exploring how fashion and styling can transform through sustainable group processes to foster deeper connections to clothing and reduce overconsumption. As part of this larger investigation, "GRATIS ZUM MITNEHMEN" was developed specifically for the Open House at HGK FHNW, focusing on the intersection of discarded clothing, value systems, and participatory practices.
In this subproject, a pile of printed, second-hand clothing was presented with the invitation to take items for free. The installation encouraged visitors to reflect on questions of worth, consumption, and inclusion within the second-hand cycle, sparking dialogue around fashion, methodology, and sustainability.
The process behind "GRATIS ZUM MITNEHMEN" was collaborative and dynamic, with clear roles and shared responsibilities. Each step, from collecting discarded clothing to washing, stamping, and arranging the pile, required teamwork and creative input. I acted as the organizational lead, identifying strengths within the team and delegating tasks to match. Spontaneous collaboration played a crucial role, supported by trust and shared vision.
We printed "GRATIS ZUM MITNEHMEN" to make the invitation clear and challenge the idea of value. By removing the price tag, we disrupted the usual connection between clothing and money, sparking curiosity and reflection. The phrase was bold and simple, designed to engage visitors in our bubble – people familiar with sustainability and experimental art – while also being accessible to others outside this context. It made the pile approachable for everyone, regardless of their background or experience with second-hand clothing.
The project was brought to life by the help of: Anna-Maria Kössler (she/her), Ant Barras (he/they), Antonia Selva (she/her), Diego Belarmín Cremonini (sie/person), Eileen Campbell (sie/ihre), Flurina Kühne (she/her), Gioia Ceravolo (she/her), Lotte-Mo Berkhan (she/her), Lou Tschumi (she/her), Luana Capaul (she/her), Maren Vorraro (she/her), Ronja Buser (she/her), Selva Maria Meyer (she/her), Vali Klauß (he/him), Vanessa Scheidegger (keine/sie), Yasmina Nyffenegger (she/her)
